Graphite is a crystalline form of the element carbon that occurs in igneous rocks, metamorphic rock, and meteorites. It is used in a variety of industrial applications due to its superior properties including heat transfer, electrical conductivity, lubricity and plasticity.
Various forms of graphite are mined, and many of them need beneficiation. Typical methods include crushing the rock and flotation to separate the mineral.
Environmental Concerns: The production of graphite has been linked to a number of environmental problems, including high levels of particulate matter, and contamination of air and wastewater. Specifically, the manufacture of artificial graphite powder, which is used to produce insulating sheets for use in batteries, can cause air pollution.
Health Issues: Inhalation of graphite dust can cause coughing and irritation of the respiratory tract. Eye contact can also be harmful, especially when prolonged exposure is sustained.
In some cases, excessive amounts of graphite dust can cause lung disorders such as pneumoconiosis or emphysema. Skin contact with dust can also irritate the skin.
TA Instruments is proud to offer the Hi-Sifter and Elbow Jet Air Classifier systems for sieving graphite powder into very fine specifications, down to 10 microns. Both systems use energy on the screen to create separation of graphite, with the Hi-Sifter system being more suited for smaller sizes and finer separations.
Graf+(r) natural and synthetic graphite powders are commonly used in a wide range of applications to enhance electrical and thermal conductivity, reduce degradation to UV radiation, increase insulation value in foams and boards, modify lubrication, friction and wear characteristics as well as provide corrosion protection.
