Graphite anodes are the carbon-based electrodes used in lithium-ion battery production. They are made from natural or synthetic/ artificial graphite and provide an electrical conductivity higher than metals without the associated toxic emissions. Unlike metals, graphite is also non-ferrous and can be made from a variety of mineral deposits. It is produced using a graphitization process that involves heating the material to high temperatures. The process is energy intensive, making security of supply a key issue for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) seeking to diversify their supplies and reduce their dependence on China.

As a result, there is a siphon effect whereby graphite producers that previously outsourced their electrodes graphitization are moving into anode processing, according to a market analyst. The higher margins available for anode graphitization mean that it can be profitable even if the electrodes market is suffering from price discounts, leading some junior producers to expand capacity in order to tap this growing demand.

Anovion is one of these junior producers and last month, the company announced that it had secured offtake agreements with a number of major EV battery OEMs for its new Vidalia graphite anode plant in the US. The agreement provides a secure supply of lithium-ion battery-grade anode material and will help Anovion establish itself as a strategic supplier to the industry.
