Silicon Monoxide Formula

Silicon Monoxide Formula

(Silicon Monoxide Formula)

silicon monoxide formula is a chemical compound with the molecular formula SiO2. This white to grey, odourless and tasteless substance is the most abundant mineral in nature. It is found in its crystalline form as quartz and also in sand. It is non-combustible and is an insulator for both heat and electricity. It is the major precursor for preparing glass and semiconductor. It is soluble in water and in the mixed acid of dilute hydrofluoric acid and nitric acid and insoluble in most organic solvents. It is a basic anhydride and reacts with acids in redox reactions.

In thin film chemistry, silicon monoxide is used for producing insulating layers in capacitors and indium oxide films are often employed to protect front surface mirrors against mechanical and chemical corrosion. The high thermal stability of this material allows it to be deposited at temperatures below 1000°C and, when used in conjunction with other insulators, it produces abrasion resistant and chemically stable coatings for optical surfaces.

This Thermo Scientific Chemicals brand product was originally part of the Alfa Aesar portfolio. Some documentation and labeling may refer to the legacy brand.

RD Mathis’ box type silicon monoxide source offers a simple, easy to use solution for deposition of high quality silicon oxide films. By carefully varying the evaporation rate and oxygen pressure, films that fall between two extremes of pure silicon monoxide and pure silicon dioxide can be reproduced. This enables the production of high performance, abrasion resistant, chemically stable and pinhole free coatings.
