EDM is an advanced technology that can be used to manufacture a wide variety of parts. Typically, this process involves the use of electrical discharges to machine conductive materials. It’s a type of machining that produces highly finished surfaces.
EDM machining can be performed with or without dielectric liquid. Both processes offer a number of advantages. However, there are certain disadvantages that need to be considered.
The processing speed of the EDM process is low, particularly in the finish machining stage. The surface quality of the workpiece is usually limited. This makes EDM less suitable for rough machining. Moreover, it’s hard to create sharp corners.
Another disadvantage is the high power consumption of the machine. Since the process is performed on combustible oils, it can produce a fire hazard. For this reason, the connections must be shielded, and the machine must be located away from sources of electricity.
Wire-cut EDM, or wire-EDM, is a type of EDM. With this method, a thin wire is cut through the metal. Then, the wire is moved in small increments to shape the desired part.
The process can be used to craft complex geometric shapes. Unlike other cutting methods, it doesn’t cause burrs. Therefore, it’s ideal for low-volume production runs.
Another advantage is the ability to machine very hard metals. EDM can achieve very close tolerances. But, it is not recommended for work on composites or wood.
Lastly, wire EDM has a lower material removal rate than other machining processes. Generally, the material removal rate is estimated in cubic inches per hour.
